What are functional oils? What is the difference between its application in pet food and ordinary oil?

Functional oils refer to oils that not only provide energy, but are also rich in specific physiologically active ingredients and can have a positive regulatory effect on the health of organisms. Ordinary fats and oils mainly play the role of energy providers in pet food.

In order to give you a clearer understanding, I have organized their core differences into the following table:

Contrast Dimensions

Functional oils

Ordinary grease

Core purpose

In addition to providing basic energy, it also regulates physiological functions, promotes health and prevents diseases in a more targeted manner.

Mainly used as an efficient source of energy, it is an essential macronutrient in pet food to maintain basic life activities.

Physiological function

Have specific health or medicinal functions, such as supporting brain development, improving skin and coat health, enhancing immunity, anti-inflammatory, maintaining intestinal health, etc.

The main function is to provide energy, essential fatty acids (such as linoleic acid) and help the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. The function is relatively basic.

Representative ingredients

Omega-3 fatty acids: mainly derived from fish oil, support skin and coat health, joint care and cognitive function.

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs): Extracted from coconut oil, etc., they can provide energy quickly and are easy to digest. They are often used for weight management of young pets and elderly pets who need to quickly replenish energy.

Lauric acid: Found abundantly in black soldier fly insect oil, it has antibacterial properties and helps support intestinal health.

Plant essential oils: have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, digestion and other effects, and are used as functional additives

Common animal fats, such as chicken fat and butter, have good palatability and are the main source of energy in traditional pet food.

Common vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, corn oil, and rapeseed oil, mainly provide energy and Omega-6 fatty acids.

Applicable objects and scenarios

Pets that require specific health support, such as dogs with joint problems, pets who need coat grooming, and individuals with sensitive gastrointestinal tracts.

Pets in different life stages, such as young pets in the rapid growth period and elderly pets in need of cognitive support

Suitable for most healthy pets to meet their basic daily energy consumption and growth needs.

To put it simply, ordinary grease is like the "gasoline" necessary for a car to ensure that it can run; functional grease is more like "motor oil" or "special additives", designed to make the engine (a certain physiological function of the pet) run better and smoother, or to solve specific "minor problems".

Summary and extension

In general, functional oils represent the advancement of pet nutrition from "full" to "well-fed". It is no longer a simple source of energy, but a precise nutritional intervention.

If you're interested in what specific functional oils (such as fish oils, MCTs, or insect oils) do or how to choose one for your pet, we can dig deeper.
